What it is
A hook with lead or tungsten moulded at the eye. Head shape controls how it behaves. Round heads fall straight and are the default. Football heads resist rolling over on rock. Shad and darter heads knife forward and keep a swimbait tracking true. Weedless and swim heads change where you can throw it entirely.
When to throw one
All year, everywhere, in every water. The jighead is how most soft plastics reach the fish, and picking the wrong weight is the most common reason a good bait gets ignored.
How to fish it
The rule that matters is the lightest head that still lets you feel bottom. In slack water inshore that might be an eighth of an ounce. In a hard tide through an inlet it might be an ounce. The correct weight changes with the tide, so it should change during your trip.
Gear that matters
Hook gap matters more than hook size on paper. A thick bodied bait on a narrow gap hook will cost you fish that felt perfectly hooked. Tungsten costs more, is smaller for the same weight, and transmits bottom texture far better than lead.
