Reading structure and depth

Fish do not live in open water in any quantity. They live on edges. Once you can read a contour map, half of a new lake stops being unknown.

Everything is about edges

An edge is any place where one thing becomes another. Deep becomes shallow. Grass becomes sand. Hard bottom becomes mud. Current becomes still. Warm becomes cold.

Edges concentrate life for two reasons. Bait uses the transition for cover and food, and predators use it because a boundary means their prey has limited escape directions. A fish sitting on a grass line only has to watch one side.

When you look at a contour map, you are looking at a map of one specific kind of edge, and it is a good proxy for several others because bottom composition and habitat tend to change where depth changes.

The features worth finding

These recur on almost every body of water, salt or fresh.

  • The drop off. Contour lines bunched close together. A fast change from shallow to deep. Fish use it as a highway and stage on the shallow lip in low light, the deep base in bright sun.
  • The channel edge. A submerged river or creek bed running through a lake or flat. Reliable in every season and unusually reliable in extremes of heat and cold.
  • The point. Contour lines pushing out toward deep water. A point that extends well out is a genuine fish highway, and the tip is not always the spot. Often it is the shoulder.
  • The hump. Closed contour rings in open water, shallower than everything around it. A summer magnet.
  • The hole. Closed rings that go deeper. A winter refuge inshore and a cold water holding spot on a flat.
  • The flat with a lip. A broad shallow area that ends in a defined drop. On a falling tide, everything leaving that flat has to cross the lip.

Add current and the picture resolves

Structure without current is a place fish might be. Structure with current is a place fish are, and you can usually say which side.

  • Fish sit down current of the break. Behind the bar, behind the piling, behind the point. They face into the flow and let it deliver.
  • The eddy is the seat. The slack pocket immediately behind an obstruction costs almost nothing to hold and gives full access to everything sweeping past.
  • Cast up current. Your bait should arrive the way real food arrives, drifting naturally with the flow. A bait swimming against the current looks wrong to everything.
  • The seam is the target. Where fast water meets slow water there is a visible line. That line is where to put the cast.

This is why depth contours and tide stage together are far more useful than either alone. The contour tells you where the break is. The tide tells you which side of it to fish and when.

Stack habitat on top

A depth change is good. A depth change with grass on it is better. A depth change with grass on it at the mouth of a creek on a falling tide is the kind of spot people keep to themselves.

  • Grass edge on a contour. Look for where a seagrass polygon boundary follows or crosses a depth band boundary. That intersection is high value inshore real estate.
  • Oyster bar on a drop. Hard structure, current break, and food source in one object.
  • Hard to soft bottom transitions. Often invisible on the surface and frequently where a contour map shows a subtle change in spacing.

Layering a habitat map over a depth map turns a blank blue field into a shortlist you can fish in an afternoon rather than a season.

The one closest to deep water that also has current and cover on it. If you have to pick one feature type on unfamiliar water, a point or channel edge adjacent to the deepest nearby water is the highest percentage starting place in most systems.

Start from water temperature and light. In comfortable temperatures and low light, fish shallow structure. In extreme heat, extreme cold, or bright high sun, move to the deeper end of the same structure rather than to a different spot entirely.
