Why temperature dominates
Fish are ectothermic. Their body temperature, metabolic rate, digestion speed, and oxygen demand all track the water they are sitting in. That is not a preference, it is physiology.
- Too cold and metabolism slows, digestion takes days instead of hours, and a fish simply does not need to eat often. It will still eat, but slowly, and only if the meal is easy.
- In the band and metabolism is efficient. The fish is active, hunting, and willing to chase.
- Too warm and oxygen solubility drops while oxygen demand rises. Fish move to deeper, cooler, or better oxygenated water, and feeding windows compress into dawn and dusk.
This is also why a two degree change matters far more at the edges of a species band than in the middle of it.
Approximate comfort bands
These are general ranges rather than laws, and local populations adapt. Use them as a starting frame and let your own log correct them.

The direction matters as much as the number
Seventy degrees on the way up in spring and seventy degrees on the way down in autumn produce completely different behavior.
- Warming in spring. Fish move shallow, feed aggressively, and stage toward spawning areas. The first stable warm stretch after winter is one of the best windows of the year.
- Peak summer. Fish seek thermal refuge. Deep water, shade, moving water, spring inflows, and creek mouths. Feeding compresses to the edges of the day.
- Cooling in autumn. Often the best fishing of the year. Fish feed hard, bait schools up, and the pressure is off the water.
- Winter. Slow, deep, and precise. Small presentations, long pauses, and the warmest water you can find.
Find the micro variation
The lake average is not what the fish is sitting in. On any water there is variation of several degrees, and finding it is often the whole game.
- Dark bottom warms faster. A mud or dark sand flat in winter afternoon sun can be several degrees above the main body.
- Shallow warms and cools faster. Great in spring, a liability in a summer heat wave.
- Inflows change everything. A cold spring is a summer refuge. A warm discharge is a winter magnet.
- Wind moves warm water. A steady wind pushes the warm surface layer to the downwind bank, and takes the plankton and bait with it.
- Depth stratifies. In summer the thermocline is a real ceiling. Below it, oxygen can be too low to hold fish at all.
