Barometric pressure and fish

Almost every angler has heard that fish bite before a front. Fewer can say why, and the why is what tells you how to use it.

What pressure does to a fish

Many fish have a swim bladder, a gas filled organ used to control buoyancy. Gas volume responds to pressure. When atmospheric pressure drops, the pressure on the water column drops slightly with it, and the gas in that bladder expands a little.

The change is small in absolute terms. A thirty millibar swing is a fraction of the pressure change a fish experiences moving a few feet up or down in the water column. But it is a change the fish did not choose, applied everywhere at once, and it has to be equalized.

The more useful framing is that pressure is a signal rather than a force. A falling barometer reliably precedes weather. Wind, cloud, rain, and a change in water conditions are coming. Fish that feed hard ahead of a disruption survive better than fish that do not, and that is a behavior worth selecting for over evolutionary time.

Read the trend, not the number

Standard sea level pressure is about 1013 millibars. Knowing that today is 1017 tells you very little. Knowing that it was 1024 yesterday and is heading for 1005 tomorrow tells you a great deal.

  • Falling steadily. The classic pre frontal window. Often the best fishing of the week, and it can be excellent right up until the weather actually arrives.
  • Falling fast. Weather is close. The bite can be ferocious and short. Be safe about it.
  • Bottomed out and rising. The post frontal high. Bluebird skies, cold, and fish that have gone quiet and deep. The hardest condition most anglers face.
  • Steady high. Stable and predictable. Not exciting, but patterns hold, which makes it good for learning water.
  • Steady low. Often overcast and mild. Frequently underrated fishing.

The post frontal problem

The day after a front is the one everybody complains about. High pressure, clear sky, cold air, and fish that will not eat. This is real, and it is worth planning around rather than fighting.

What tends to help when you are stuck fishing it.

  • Go deeper. Fish drop and hold. The shallow pattern that worked two days ago is gone.
  • Go slower. Much slower than feels right. A bait that sits in the strike zone beats one that moves through it.
  • Go smaller. Downsize the profile and lighten the leader.
  • Fish the warmest water you can find. On a cold post frontal day, a dark bottom flat in the afternoon sun can be several degrees warmer and hold everything.
  • Wait for the afternoon. Post frontal mornings are often dead and things improve as the water warms.

Using it in practice

Pressure is a scheduling variable more than a tactical one. It is most valuable when it tells you which day to fish rather than which lure to tie on.

  • When you can pick your day, pick the falling side of the curve.
  • When a front is coming Thursday, Wednesday afternoon is often better than the weekend.
  • When you are locked into a post frontal day, change your expectations and your presentation rather than your spot list.
  • Log the pressure with your catches. Over a season your own log will tell you how your water responds, which beats any general rule.

Common follow ups

The trend matters far more than the absolute reading. Falling pressure ahead of a front is generally the most productive window. Steady pressure produces reliable but unremarkable fishing. Rapidly rising pressure behind a front is usually the toughest condition.

A change of a few millibars over several hours is enough to be a meaningful signal. What you are really reading is the approach of weather, so the rate of change is the useful measure rather than any particular threshold.

The effect is generally considered more pronounced in shallow water, where a fish cannot easily compensate by changing depth, and less pronounced offshore. Inshore saltwater and shallow lakes both respond noticeably, deep offshore water much less so.
