When to throw one
Around cover. Wood, rock, grass edges, dock pilings, riprap. Prespawn when bass are feeding on crayfish coming out of the rocks, and again in the fall. Inshore, a craw profile on a jig is one of the better sheepshead and black drum presentations, and almost nobody throws it.
How to fish it
Texas rig it and pitch to targets, or use it as a jig trailer. Hop it once or twice per target and move on. Creature baits are a target bait, not a search bait, and covering water with one is a slow way to fish.
Gear that matters
Heavier line and a stout rod. You are fishing in cover on purpose, and the fight is about getting the fish's head turned before it reaches whatever it was living in.
Working it too far. Two hops per pitch, then reel in and hit the next piece of cover.
