Chatterbaits and bladed jigs

A hexagonal blade bolted to a jig. Hunts, deflects and thumps like nothing else.

What it is

A skirted jig with a flat hexagonal blade attached at the line tie. On the retrieve the blade slaps side to side against the head, producing a hard vibration and an erratic hunting action that no spinnerbait or crankbait reproduces. The trailer you add changes the action substantially.

When to throw one

Stained water, grass, and prespawn. It fills the same slot as a spinnerbait but comes through vegetation better and produces more vibration per ounce. In the south it is also a genuinely good redfish bait around grass edges, which is not what it was designed for.

How to fish it

Steady retrieve at whatever speed keeps the blade hammering. Rip it free when it loads up in grass, exactly like a lipless. Trailer choice is not a detail here, and a paddletail speeds the action up while a craw slows it down and widens the hunt.

Gear that matters

A moderate action rod helps, because the vibration and the short strike rate both improve when the rod absorbs some of the hit.

The common mistake

Fishing it without a trailer, or in clean open water where a crankbait covers ground better.

What a web page cannot know

Everything above is true of chatterbaits and bladed jigs everywhere, in every month, for every angler. That is exactly the problem with it. Cobia answers the narrower question.

Right now on your water
Ranked against the bladed jigs in your box
Color for today's clarity and light
Size and weight for the tide you are fishing

Those four lines need a location, a clock and your actual tackle box. No website has any of them.
